Earth's Core Hotter Than First Believed

coreUsing a series of very technical tests, scientists from the French research facility CEA have determined that the Earth's core is roughly 6,000 degrees Celsius. That is approximately 1,000 degrees hotter than the temperature obtained by tests in the 1990s.

These new figures show that the center of the Earth is just as hot as the surface of the sun.

The experiment that supplied the new temperature used X-rays to probe tiny samples of iron at extraordinary pressures to examine how the iron crystals form and melt. The BBC reported that "To replicate the enormous pressures at the core boundary - more than a million times the pressure at sea level - they used a device called a diamond anvil cell - essentially a tiny sample held between the points of two precision-machined synthetic diamonds.

Once the team's iron samples were subjected to the high pressures and high temperatures using a laser, the scientists used X-ray beams to carry out "diffraction" - bouncing X-rays off of the nuclei of the iron atoms and watching how the pattern changed as the iron changed from solid to liquid."

I’ve always made it a point to find practical ways to help my gifted students develop creativity.  It’s not enough to say “Oh, you’re really creative,” or to just settle for believing that your current curriculum is sufficient in developing creativity in the minds of gifted children....

Those Held Accountable for Standardized...

Recent discussions on the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) have largely focused on accountability issues, particularly testing and what it does with (or to, depending on your perspective) children and teachers alike.

If we accept most of the chatter and urban legends, we would believe that testing—particularly in the name of accountability—has led...

In March, I continued my conversations with thought leaders around the world. The ABC of Gender Equality in Education: Aptitude, Behaviour, Confidence report from PISA was yet another wake up call to the status of gender in education today.  I also learned of new global initiatives to make education more accessible and more...

Multicultural Project for the Gifted:...

When discussing perspective, I like to use the old tale about the blind men and the elephant.  Essentially, the blind men learn that an elephant has been brought to the village.  The men have no concept of an elephant but want to touch it. As each man touches a different part of the elephant, they each provide a different description. For instance, one thinks it’s a...
