Using a series of very technical tests, scientists from the French research facility CEA have determined that the Earth's core is roughly 6,000 degrees Celsius. That is approximately 1,000 degrees hotter than the temperature obtained by tests in the 1990s.
These new figures show that the center of the Earth is just as hot as the surface of the sun.
The experiment that supplied the new temperature used X-rays to probe tiny samples of iron at extraordinary pressures to examine how the iron crystals form and melt. The BBC reported that "To replicate the enormous pressures at the core boundary - more than a million times the pressure at sea level - they used a device called a diamond anvil cell - essentially a tiny sample held between the points of two precision-machined synthetic diamonds.
Once the team's iron samples were subjected to the high pressures and high temperatures using a laser, the scientists used X-ray beams to carry out "diffraction" - bouncing X-rays off of the nuclei of the iron atoms and watching how the pattern changed as the iron changed from solid to liquid."

Regardless of a school’s organizational structure, non-profit or for-profit, retaining students is quite challenging these days. Traditional higher education schools are competing with blue-collar professions, schools that offer particular certifications in lieu of college degrees, and prospects have many more school choices than years gone by. So it is not surprising that retention is such an important...

A new school year is beginning. My view is that teachers need to always have kids on task! Checking homework in the beginning of class, doing clerical stuff? Finish your lesson with a few minutes to spare? What to do? I am not a believer in giving "free" time. That...
It's back to school time! In an effort to help their children and their schools succeed in the next academic year, millions of parents around the world are already involved in school foundations or PTA's to...

"There has been a long-term polarization in the job market since the 1980s, with growth of high-skill and low-skill jobs at the expense of traditional middle-skill jobs, which have been most susceptible to automation and globalization. The Great Recession and protracted recovery that followed it have only accelerated this trend, as...

It's a new school year and I'd like to share one thought: Focus on the positive!
