Using a series of very technical tests, scientists from the French research facility CEA have determined that the Earth's core is roughly 6,000 degrees Celsius. That is approximately 1,000 degrees hotter than the temperature obtained by tests in the 1990s.
These new figures show that the center of the Earth is just as hot as the surface of the sun.
The experiment that supplied the new temperature used X-rays to probe tiny samples of iron at extraordinary pressures to examine how the iron crystals form and melt. The BBC reported that "To replicate the enormous pressures at the core boundary - more than a million times the pressure at sea level - they used a device called a diamond anvil cell - essentially a tiny sample held between the points of two precision-machined synthetic diamonds.
Once the team's iron samples were subjected to the high pressures and high temperatures using a laser, the scientists used X-ray beams to carry out "diffraction" - bouncing X-rays off of the nuclei of the iron atoms and watching how the pattern changed as the iron changed from solid to liquid."
In the News: (4/20/16) Goodbye, President Andrew Jackson. Jackson is going to be replaced on the United States twenty dollar by Harriet Tubman. The selection of Tubman, abolitionist and known for her amazing work of bringing slaves to freedom along the Underground Railroad, was made this week by Treasury Secretary Jack Lew. It will be the first woman's image to be on paper currency...

School has never been one of my son’s favorite activities. Even in kindergarten, he quickly determined there were other places and other things he would rather do. Then, he’d choose an afternoon of intense Lego-ing over a half-day of classroom reading and group activities.
Now in the fourth grade, he can spend hours watching videos so he can teach himself how to code to improve his experience with Minecraft. This is the same boy who will spend an hour and a half protesting...
Amazing Book Facts:
Did You Know?
1. Did you know that the Chinese invented paper around 105 AD? Before this, people wrote on parchment (animal skin) to create books.
2. Each second, 57 books are sold. Someone figured that in one day, you’d need 78 miles of book shelving to store that amount of books.

When one launches into a conversation on the topic of “student research,” the discussion invariably turns negative. Whether it is diving down the rabbit hole of high-stakes testing or driving off the cliff of data security and use concerns, it can be a challenge to take a substantive look at the value and positive impact of student data.
It doesn’t have to be this way, nor should it. Groups like the Data Quality Campaign do yeoman’s work...
