Facial Recognition Tech Helps ID Bomb Suspects

wanted BostonImproved technology played a big role in the identification of the two primary suspects in the Boston Marathon bombing.

Law enforcement officials were deluged with digital images and video after asking anyone who was in the area during the event to submit them. Traditionally it would take hundreds of officers countless hours to examine all of that media, but new versions of facial recognition technology have made that task much more manageable.

CNet explains how this tech works: "The software, which can help pick a person out of crowd, looks for differentiating features -- from the shape of a mouth to the ridge on a nose to the distance between a pair of eyes.

3VR in San Francisco has developed software that extracts information from video and then makes it searchable for its clients, which include retailers, banks, security firms and law enforcement."

Deep Learning Teachers, Strategic...

In his work on top performing professors, Ken Bain wrote about three types of college students: surface learners, strategic learners, and deep learners. Surface learners are those students just trying to survive. Strategic learners play the system, learning and scoring well enough to get the A. Turning Points: One Teacher's...

I thought it would be interesting to trace back turning points in my teaching career--times when I had a breakthrough in teaching, met influential people, experienced intense, meaningful events or occurrences. Dictionary.com defines a turning point as “a time at which a decisive change in a situation occurs, especially one with beneficial results.”

Reflecting on turning points, in my opinion, can help connect the dots, to see how events are connected, and what molded and shaped our...

When teaching class recently, the topic of how people respond to finding out that my students are studying to become elementary school teachers came up. Almost all of these student teachers had stories. Often, when they told someone they were becoming a teacher, the person made a face. In one case, a gentleman told the aspiring teacher, “you can do better.”

Ouch.

Can do better than serving young people for a living? Helping them have a better future? Spending years of their...
