Beyond the Bulletin Board

Teachers know that creating a genuine audience for students’ work dramatically increases their focus and motivation. Yet when student work goes beyond pen and paper, what’s the best way to showcase it?

Mark Anderson’s post on displaying student online work highlights this issue--an important one to consider for educators in tech-integrated classrooms.

Is it possible for students to publish interactive content online and gather reader feedback, while still ensuring safety? Anderson believes it is, and for this purpose he suggests Edmodo, a free tool that uses an interface similar to that of FaceBook. Educators can assign and assess student work, and only invited visitors can access the class page. See five great ideas for back-to-school Edmodo activities.

With any method of displaying online work, teachers should consider their students’ level of technology skills to determine whether a given platform will be feasible. They also should select an online tool that not only gives young people an easy method of updating, but also enables proper teacher oversight.

Ideas to Cultivate a Positive Classroom...

Online teaching encourages us to think outside the box. It is different than that of a brick-and-mortar where you have your office, and your students stop by to just “visit .”Your colleagues are not next door to run to lunch, and there is no band practicing their marching routines for the big football game. But online learning offers so much, and as lifelong learners, we must show our students that it is just as...

Importance of decorating your classroom - A new school year is beginning.

I read a recent study by researchers from Carnegie Mellon University that a decorated room is distracting and  can negatively impact the learning of our students. Although they don’t say teachers should go to a bare classroom, it is suggested that teachers think about whether “some of their visas displays may be distracting to young...

As teachers, we are lifelong learners that want to be the best we can be. In my opinion, we are always changing and learning, and we want to do what is right for the students we teach. I always tell my students that I am a mentor, guide, cheerleader, and co-learner. As you approach another new course with students that are needing you to give them your all, what will you do to ensure that you are being innovative...

Teachers: Are you Conscious?

Mindfulness-or training one’s attention to focus on the present moment-has become all the rage, filtering into schools and classrooms. Books and articles suggest that teachers and students can benefit from mindfulness practices such as mindful breathing, meditation, and mindful walking.

While I subscribe to the concept of mindfulness, the term might put off some educators, who don’t want to get up in cultural nuances or esoteric practices. Therefore, let’s use the phrase, conscious...
