Chromebook Pixel Debuts

On Thursday, Google introduced the Chromebook Pixel, the latest version of its Chromebook laptops, which store just about everything in cloud storage. The $1,300 Wi-Fi model includes a nearly 13-inch display touchscreen and begins shipping next week.

By combining tablet and laptop technology, heavyweight Intel chips and the most beautiful screen for your dollar, it’s designed for that juicy segment of the personal computer buyers known as “power users.”

The Pixel can store a small amount of data for downloads and such, but the philosophy behind the machine is that users will store nearly all of their data in the cloud. And as with the other Chromebooks, Pixel users are expected to use Google products to supplement other software.

Google's strategy is compensating for the Pixel's lack of a hard drive with free online storage, which might help wary buyers make the transition to the cloud. The Pixel includes one terabyte of Google Drive storage for three years, or $1,800 worth of storage. The LTE-enabled Chromebooks will also come with 100 megabytes of free monthly data traffic for two years.

Still, the steep cost might be a tough pill to swallow for even the most adventurous power users and devoted cloud advocates.

TEACHING KIDS THAT THEY HAVE A HISTORY USING THEIR FAVORITE CHILDHOOD TOY

When you think of your childhood~ does one toy or stuffed animal or other item~ comes to mine? Mine was Pinkie. Pinkie is beige(so go figure the name I chose as a little girl). My mom had to sew her eyes and nose back on a number of times and the stuffing got squashed when I dropped it in the street and a car ran after it before my dad heroically rescued Pinkie for me.

In the beginning of...

Enlightenment: Gamification Theories of...

  1. I have been wondering, "What learning theories actually support the use of games; where are games most appropriate?" Reminding myself of the differences between intrinsic motivation (doing something for its own joy-the reward is the doing) and extrinsic motivation (doing something for a reward or to avoid a punishment), I decided to push myself to review the model developed by John Keller-ARCS (Attention, Relevance, Confidence, and Satisfaction). These seem to apply to what I thus far...

A Rubric for Research

Teaching elementary students, as young as first grade, to research is no easy task. It requires enormous patience, persistence, and a belief in your students.

Training children to be young researchers provides them with all kinds of skills, which will help them succeed in college and the workplace.
Research skills have found their own place in the national Common Core English Language Arts standards, which requires students to conduct short and sustained research projects....

Enlightenment: Gamification Essentials...

  1. Autumn is a time for the bright colors and crispness of a season that I always associate with learning. Each day awakens us to possibilities, change, and bright new beginnings.
  2. In that spirit, my students and I are seeking to apply the principles of a new way of learning to this season's academic challenges: gaming! We are enlightening our work in Washington DC with our project called, "Monuments, Memorials and Museums". The project won us an Unsung Heroes Award from ING. The $...
