Site URL: Dictionary.com
Content: Dictionary.com offers free, comprehensive definitions of any word in the English language. The site also has a word of the day and various word-based games.
Design: The design is a bit cluttered, and the word-entry box at the top of the page gets a little lost. In addition, once you enter a word, the definition gets buried below text-based ads. The overall effect makes what should be a very streamlined process unnecessarily busy.
Review: Dictionary.com does exactly what its name suggests. The site offers an easy-to-use dictionary that could absolutely replace the traditional printed version. The site succeeds in its primary mission as an online dictionary, and it offers a number of other useful tools and gadgets including a recently launched Spanish-language dictionary.
Bottom Line: Dictionary.com can replace a printed dictionary for students at home and in the classroom. The site has no learning curve, and anyone with even basic computer skills should be able to use it easily. Teachers might also want to use the site's “Word of the Day” feature which you can view on the site or to which you can subscribe via email.
