App Name: 5 Dice - Order of Operations Game
Cost: Free
What does it promise? This simple math game, intended for the upper-elementary and middle-school grades, helps students practice their order of operations.
Does it deliver? Yes. The game encourages students to use higher-order thinking. Given the answer but not the equation, kids solve the “target” number by working backward. Best of all, teachers are able to receive immediate feedback on students’ progress.
The 5 Dice app works for students at different skill levels. For example, an elementary student could use simple addition and subtraction to achieve the target, while a middle-school student could perform complex combinations of many operations to reach the target.
The app’s goal is helping teachers incorporate formative assessment strategies into math games. Accordingly, 5 Dice’s built-in reporting feature lets teachers know how students are doing and how much time they spend playing the game.
Can I use it in my classroom? This app can enhance any elementary-level math lesson.
