iPad App Review: Toontastic

Share

App Name: Toontastic

Cost:  Free

What does it promise?  Toontastic empowers kids to draw, animate and share their own cartoons through imaginative play.

ToontasticDoes it deliver? Toontastic teaches storytelling principles that help promote creativity. Its drawing tools bring kids’ wildest ideas to life alongside virtual play sets full of pirates, princesses, far-away galaxies, and many other characters and settings. Cartoons can be shared online via ToonTube, Toontastic’s Global Storytelling Network where children learn about other cultures through the stories of peers around the world.

Making cartoons with Toontastic is as easy as putting on a vintage puppet show. Users simply press the record button, move their characters onscreen, and tell their stories through play. Once they’re done, Toontastic will play back their animation and voice as a cartoon for them to share with friends and family around the world.

Can I use it in my classroom?  Despite the seemingly very technical nature of creating an animated cartoon, Toontastic is very appropriate for students as young as early elementary age. They can use it to animate stories or book reports they write, and the app can be adapted to suit nearly any lesson.
