App Name: Science 360
Cost: Free
What does it promise? The National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Science360 for iPad provides easy access to engaging science and engineering images and video from around the globe. The app also offers a news feed with breaking news from NSF-funded institutions. Content is either produced by NSF or gathered from scientists, colleges and universities, and NSF science and engineering centers.
Does it deliver? It sure does. Users will find spectacular high-resolution images to download to their iPads. The streaming videos (WiFi or 3G connection required) are fun and engaging and cover a wide range of topics.
A handy tool for teachers is the ability to email videos and images for later use. In addition, the in-app news feed lets teachers keep abreast of breaking science news. With a single touch, teachers can keep an archive of material they’ve used in class, saving favorite images and video clips for easy re-use.
Arguably the app’s best feature is the new content it adds weekly.
Can I use it in my classroom? Any lesson related to science can be improved with a little help from the Science 360 app.
