Great Sites for Teaching About ... Preparing for the Future

Great Sites Center

Each week, Education World's Great Sites for Teaching About ... page highlights Web sites to help educators work timely themes into their lessons. To commemorate National School Counseling Week, we searched the Web for sites educators can use as their students consider their well-being and their futures. Included: Career sites, inspirational sites, and self-assessment sites!

  1. BLS Career Information
    http://stats.bls.gov/k12/html/edu_over.htm
The Bureau of Labor Statistics offers this look at careers for kids in elementary school. Potential career choices are based on students' interests and listed under the headings Music/Arts, Science, P.E./Outdoors, Social Studies, Reading, and Math. The resulting list of jobs under each discipline provides useful information about what people in a profession do, what the profession is like, preparing for the profession, money, the future, and where to look for additional information. The Teacher's Guide can help you use this awesome site in instruction and classroom discussion.

  2. Can Do!
    http://www.ucando.org/
An extension of Peter Reynolds's inspirational work for kids, Can DO! offers "stories, activities, and resources to help create a better understanding and deeper appreciation of how people can overcome challenges and reach their dreams by using their abilities and a 'can-do' attitude." Students can take an abilities survey, complete puzzles, write stories and poems, share dreams, and learn to make positive changes for themselves!

  3. Career Trail
    http://library.thinkquest.org/11720/
This ThinkQuest offering is subtitled "A student guide to jobs, resumes & vocational interests." There is a career quiz, help with resumes, and lots and lots of content on jobs and making satisfying choices. The authors use the metaphor of a town in the Old West consistently throughout the site, which provides a nice tie-in for the materials.

  4. Conflict Resolution the Peaceful Way
    http://www.stark.k12.oh.us/Docs/units/conflict/
The materials provided here could be used as an interdisciplinary thematic unit on conflict resolution for middle schoolers. The unit is planned to last three full weeks and engages students in the conflict resolution process in all areas of the curriculum. It is easily adaptable to any classroom and worth checking out.

  5. Dealing With Feelings
    http://www.kidshealth.org/kid/feeling/
KidsHealth.org offers more than two dozen articles on everything from friends and bullies to being overweight and working through feelings about divorce. Each piece is short and to the point, perfect for sharing during a conference or printing or e-mailing for future reference. There are also many links to additional health-related topics for children, written specifically for children.

  6. Keirsey Temperament Sorter
    http://www.advisorteam.com/user/kts.asp
Best suited for high school-aged students, this online assessment determines which temperament category a person falls into: artisan, guardian, rational, or idealist. The site explains the characteristics of each temperament type. The hope is that by gaining self-awareness, students will be able to get along more successfully with others and find true satisfaction for themselves in the choices they make.

  7. Making Choices for Life
    http://library.thinkquest.org/J001709/
This ThinkQuest entry helps students consider the choices they make and the ramifications those choices have on their resulting happiness. The site provides an online survey with results students can view to compare their values with those of others. The Values section of the site allows for self-examination, and You Make the Call and Moral Combat Theater help students put those values into practice.

  8. Mazemaster: Self-Assessment
    http://www.mazemaster.on.ca/eng/mod1/mod1_index.html
The self-assessment is only one part of the Mazemaster site, and it requires users to create a unique login and password in order to proceed. But once students have done that, they have access to very thorough inventories on Interests, Skills, and Values. After students have completed the assessments, they are then able to go to the Action Plan link and develop strategies for job seeking. This site will help students plan for everything from summer employment through future careers!

  9. Role Model Project for Girls
    http://www.womenswork.org/girls/careers.html
At this site, female professionals share information about their careers and the training involved so that girls can begin to appreciate the possibilities in their own future. Though it is not exhaustive by any means, the list gives insight and advice that can only be shared by professionals in their fields. Students who hit reload on the browser will get a random professional who will share her career!

  10. That's Me! A Guide to Personality
    http://library.thinkquest.org/C004361/
This site offers insight into the psychology of people's personalities, presenting many schools of thought and studies that help us understand what makes people "tick." Polly and Professor Poofy explain the theories of personality in simple terms that even upper elementary students can appreciate, and it's great for middle schoolers too. For Classroom Use offers teachers lots of activities and games to use with students.
