Remember the literacy-promoting kids' show "Reading Rainbow"? Host LeVar Burton has started a project on KickStarter, hoping to bring the program back.
"I believe every child has a right, and a need, to be literate," said Burton on his profile. "We have a responsibility to prepare our children...and right now, the numbers show that we, as a society, are failing in that responsibility."
When "Reading Rainbow" began in 1983, the program encouraged children to read physical books. Now, Burton and his team plan to launch a number of digital resources, such as a Reading Rainbow app.
With 34 days remaining in the project, it has engaged 11,948 backers and raised $550,764 toward the $1 million goal.
