As Wilson High School in Washington, D.C., held a recent gay pride celebration, Principal Pete Cahall made a surprise announcement for which he had been waiting 50 years.
“I am a proud gay man that just happens to be the principal of Wilson High School,” he said as the students and staff around him erupted in cheers.
Not even Cahall's family knew, and he had told only a few close friends. Cahall said he hoped his courage would inspire other students to come out.
The school expressed its full support for the principal. Wilson Senior Tao Marwell said, “That was so unexpected. I had no idea. I have so much more respect for him now.”
The Westboro Baptist Church has threatened to protest at the school, but Wilson’s Gay Straight Alliance said it will be ready with a counter-protest.
