Alabama-based Life-Savers Ministries, which runs children's after-school programs and religious education, admitted it made a mistake in quoting Adolf Hitler on a billboard, reported the Ledger-Enquirer in Columbus, GA.
The billboard, which has since been taken down, featured five smiling kids beneath the Hitler quote "He alone, who owns the youth, gains the future."
"We are pulling the billboard and certainly never intended to cause confusion. ... Herbert Hoover would have been a far better one to quote when he said, 'Children are our most valuable resource,'" Life-Savers founder James Anderegg told the Ledger-Enquirer. "We are a children’s organization and had honorable intentions and nothing less."
Life-Savers serves hundreds of students “from around 20 different rough and tough locations throughout Opelika and Auburn [AL],” according to the organization’s Web site.
Commented article reader Becky Carlton Clifton, “Area resident speaking here. Life Savers is a very good ministry, but I am appalled they made such a bone-headed decision in this billboard! Wow!”
