According to The Telegraph, three characters from the Harry Potter series, Albus Dumbledore, Minerva McGonagall and Severus Snape, have been named among school staff in the U.K. as favorite teachers. Professor Dumbledore took first place, in second place was Miss Honey from Matilda, and in third place was Professor McGonagall.
Philip Nel, professor of English at Kansas State University, said the inclusion of three Hogwarts teachers is not due just to the popularity of the series; it is also because author J.K. Rowling understands the teaching profession.
"In many ways, she uses her books to highlight what does and doesn't work in the classroom," said Nel. "Each time you're looking at a teacher in the Harry Potter books, you're also looking at Rowling's sense of what teaching is, and what good and bad teaching looks like."
