Read to children Jack Prelutsky's poem "I Love You More Than Applesauce." (The poem was originally published in Prelutsky's book, It's Valentine's Day. You might be able to find a copy of the poem online by searching for its title. [example 1] Talk about some of the things/people your students love the most and make a list of their responses on an easel pad. Review the list with children. Then give each child a large pre-cut paper heart shape. Let children copy the words "I love you" onto their hearts and then illustrate the people or things they love the most.
Note: One teacher's students wrote their own "I Love You More" rhymes.
