ADMINISTRATIVE
PROFESSIONALS WEEK

Each April, we recognize some of the most important people in our school during Administrative Professionals Week. The International Association of Administrative Professionals conducted a survey of its members to learn how they would like their week to be observed. Their favorite celebrations included

  • a school-wide observance or a special event for administrative staff;
  • a training session or education event;
  • a monetary award; [content block]
  • a day off;
  • optional recognitions provided by individual departments or managers;
  • a card or letter of thanks from a supervisor;
  • lunch; or
  • candy, flowers, or another gift.

    How do these professionals want to be recognized in your school? Ask them! I know when I was one, I wanted to go out to lunch, so ask what would make the day special to them. One size does not fit all.

    PASSING ALONG A GOOD ATTITUDE

    Create a "Good Attitude" certificate and award it to staff members. Write their names on the back of the certificate. When one of those staff members sees a colleague displaying a positive attitude, they can award the certificate to that person, who then puts his or her name on the back of the certificate and passes it along to another colleague when appropriate.

    GRIN AND SHARE IT

    Spring Break was over and the teacher was asking the class about their vacations. She turned to Johnny and asked what he'd done.

    "We visited my grandmother in Kalamazoo, Michigan," he replied.

    "That sounds like an excellent vocabulary word," the teacher said. "Can you tell the class how you spell Kalamazoo?"

    Johnny thought about it for a moment, then said, "You know, come to think of it, we went to Ohio."
