Using School-Based Management to Promote School-Community Relationships

Editor's Note: Today's guest post comes from Dr. Matthew Lynch, an assistant professor of education.

School-based management is another means of increasing parental involvement in the educational process. Proponents of this approach believe it is better for schools to create a managerial group, which possesses most of the decision-making power to influence the learning process of students at schools, rather than this power residing solely with the school principal.

The managerial group or committee should include teachers, parents, administrators, educational reformers~ and community leaders. This school-based management strategy is based on the notion that people who are close to students can make better policy decisions to help students perform better and achieve results. School-based management is meant to improve in-class and in-school decisions that may positively influence students and help them increase self-confidence.

Such programs also increase the confidence level of teachers, making them feel more comfortable and able to help students properly. Teachers may also offer extracurricular activities to increase parents participation in the education of their children.

These activities help parents from different socioeconomic, cultural, racial, and religious backgrounds come together on a common platform and share experiences and information. They also succeed in increasing the interest of students in school, and encourage their parents to influence them to attend school regularly.
