SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER

Competencies and Beliefs:
Have a repertoire of instructional strategies which will facilitate every students success
Communicate thorough knowledge of the content areas
Encourage and build confidence in all students
Serve as a model of excellence and effort

Responsibilities:
Set professional development goals
Attend pre service training and orientation
Participate in professional development offerings throughout the year
Set instructional goals for students
Implement special education assessments
Develop and monitor IEPs based upon assessments
Collaborate with classroom teachers in implementing IEPs
Provide individualized and small group instruction according to student IEPs
Produce lessons which illustrate an understanding of key concepts
Maintain a safe and accessible environment
Comply with all state and federal laws regarding students with disabilities
Qualifications:
Minimum of a bachelors degree from an accredited college or university
Possession of a state teaching certificate in special education
Previous teaching experience preferred or other work with children in a special needs setting
Demonstrated excellence in all academic pursuits
Strong written and oral communication skills
Familiarity with urban public school systems
