CONTENT:
This site from the Art Institute of Chicago presents paintings and prints by "Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669), one of the most celebrated artists in history." It is a preview site for the exhibit that was held at the Institute February-May, 2004. It is in no way a comprehensive showing but there is enough here for a great introduction to Rembrandt's work.
SITE DESIGN:
The site's simple design makes navigation easy. Click the "Preview the Exhibition" button to enter on the main page. Subsequent pages have a left side menu that includes the major sections of the site. The pictures are high quality and can be viewed in two sizes.

REVIEW:
Teachers of art and art history will find lots of resources and information here to supplement their curriculum. Of special interest will be the Exhibition Themes that include where the major themes of Rembrandt's work are briefly described. Embedded links take the user to the works that are mentioned. The Related Works section provides a gallery of his work. Click on the images for a larger image with identifying information. Choose the "Old Man in a Gorget and Black Cap" and you will be transported to the "Art Access" area of the larger Institute Web site. Here you will find background information about the artist that is hyperlinked to the glossary, lesson plans that can be adapted for different grade levels, family activities that can be done at home or adapted for school use and a list of related books and media.
