App Name: Science Glossary (iPhone/iPad)
Cost: Free
What does it promise? Science Glossary promises an extensive list of scientific terms for students of all grade levels to refer to if they are struggling to grasp a concept or for exam prep.
“All definitions link to related terms and to free, detailed science learning modules. Though geared for high school and undergraduate students using our website, the glossary and modules are appropriate for anyone generally interested in science,” according to Vision Learning's statement on iTunes.
Does it deliver? Yes. In a time where STEM education is stressed, this is a useful application. It does seem to go beyond simple terms that you would find in more elementary science glossaries. For example, you won’t find a definition for "Saturn" in this app.
It can really serve as a great research paper tool. Students who are asked to do a research paper on a scientist can browse the many who are included in this application. They can click on a name like "Stephen Hawking" and find a very detailed definition of who he is and what he has accomplished.
Students can also explore modules associated with the term they are looking up which can sometimes provide further clarification. That being said, when you click on the modules section and then on one of the modules listed, the app takes you directly to the Vision Learning website. It would be easier if the information was already in the application but it’s still taking you towards further explanation of the terms and gives you an added tool to reference.
Can I use it in the classroom?
Yes but it’s limiting. The application isn’t as great for in-class use by educators as it is for students studying on their own. That being said it’s a great tool to tell your students about or have them use during a classroom scavenger hunt. Overall it is a solid app that does have quite a bit of educational value.
