App Name: NASA (iPhone/iPad/Android Devices)
Cost: Free
What does it promise? The NASA App possesses a wide array of educational tools for students ranging from images, videos and news to satellite trackers. It also claims to have a way for students to get involved in one of the four fields of STEM study in order to better understand the world we live in, the universe that surrounds us and how it works.
Does it deliver? Yes the NASA app delivers. The app contains more than 14,000 images with a new image updated every day. Provided with the image is a description of what students or users are looking at. For example, today’s “Image of The Day” happens to be titled, “Hubble Meeting the Neighbors.” The description dives into the many galaxies that exist in the universe and explains that the image features a dwarf irregular galaxy know as PGC 18431. Following that is an explanation of what PGC 18431 is. This is only a small aspect of a huge app that provides a world of knowledge to students. Students can identify galaxies, stars, and planets as well as learn about the programs that NASA has.
Can I use it in the classroom? Yes. This app can be a great supplement to an astronomy class or lesson. It’s packed full of information, so much in fact that it might be difficult to ever explore all of its contents. The biggest challenge educators might face is narrowing down what information they will need for the day's lessons. The videos that the app contains can also be a good way for educators to vary instruction and engage students by showing them examples of what they’ve been learning. Students who are interested in the latest space-related news can also look in the news section for daily releases.
