App Name: goReact
Cost: Free
What does it promise? The app promises a cool way to not only learn the periodic table, but to see what kind of reactions can happen between certain chemicals when they are paired. The app also promises nearly 300 different reactions that can be made.
“With goREACT, you can become a virtual chemist,” according to iTunes.
“Whether you're a novice or expert, the free play and guided modes make it fun and fascinating.”
Does it deliver? Yes. Using the app the student will be able to create chemicals such as the chemicals use to create the felt tip of a pen by fusing Osmium and Iridium. While testing the app we also found out that Chlorine and Gold can be very irritating to the eyes and the skin. The app really delivers in terms of its educational value. It’s pretty impressive how many different combinations you are able to create and some of the results yielded from the combination.
Can I use it in the classroom? Yes. In fact, a good idea would be to have students use this app to create around 20 reactions from homework. The next day they can reveal their results to their classmates and see which ones they got as well as teach their peers about the reactions they might have missed. It’s a good way to have students memorize the periodic table as well. All of the elements are clearly labeled and also contain their abbreviations. It’s a great app for any chemistry or biology teacher to use in the classroom.
