September marks National Library Card Sign up Month, when libraries across the country highlight the benefits of being a member of one’s community library. This year, infamous comic book writer Stan Lee is acting as Honorary Chair of Library Card Sign-up Month.
“Having a library card it’s like having a key to all the information in the world. When you have a library card you can read anything about anything, and I have found that whatever you read, it doesn’t matter, it increases your fund of knowledge,” Lee said in an American Library Association press release. “So a library card is the 'Open Sesame' to all the knowledge in the world.”
As a child, Lee said that he couldn’t afford the cost of books as a youth, which partly fuels his conviction to get library cards in the hands of today’s kids.
Library Card Sign-up Month is a nationwide, monthlong event that encourages parents to help their kids get library access and cards in hand.
