During peer mediation, students who have undergone training in mediation techniques listen to fellow students describe a disagreement and then help the students to resolve the issue. The purpose of peer mediation is to defuse a situation before it escalates beyond a war of words to physical violence.
The programs are effective because students best understand the types of conflicts that arise between their peers.
