Treasures: We Must Teach

  1. Today in my Constitutional Law class, I had the opportunity to teach the Six Thinking Hats of Leadership Theoryby Edward de Bono. I recommend this theory to every teacher. The purpose was to refine the questioning skills of high performing students and to help them frame collaboration as learning partners in their reading and discussion procedures. It was a huge success!
  2. The theory is best pictured in the illustrations below: The white hat helps students understand the role of objectivity, data analysis and facts; the black hat helps guide judgment, critical thinking, and scholarship on a topic or idea; the blue hat seeks balance, collaboration, organization and continuity; the yellow hat, asks for optimism and the "what if" possibilities of a positive view of a problem; the red hat seeks passion, power, hunches, and feelings about ideas; and, the green hat, asks for creativity in analysis and growth options.
  3. Looking outside of the usual areas to teach conversation and the art of discussion makes this theory an amazing linchpin to my Socratic Seminars!
