Heralding: A New Commitment to Kindness-Watch Your Words

  • As teachers~ we clearly~ simply~ plainly do not curse. It is heinous! In many religious traditions~ thoughts and words carry immense weight. Thoughts define us and words imprint upon us deep meaning and psychological impact. We must therefore exercise in everything we say and do~ care~ love~ kindness~ and a higher purpose than our own need for unmeasured urgency of expression to others. In no other profession is that more deeply understood than in teaching~ learning~ and leading.
  • Some teachers express frustration in such hollow phrases as~ "I am going to kill him~ or I am going to slap her face!" These exaggerations~ according to my old Italian grandmother~ where allowing the power of evil to enter your heart and destroy your sweetness even when said in jest or exaggeration. She was a wise informally educated lady who spoke little English but fluent wisdom! Evil can find enough ideas to harm you in today's social media world! Rav Haim Palachi~ the great Rabbi of Izmir~ Turkey (1788-1869)~ once spoke about his righteous grandmother~ and described how when she became angry and felt the urge to curse someone~ she would exclaim~ "Ha'mavet Al YafridBenenu"- "Death shall not separate between us." She accustomed herself to this exclamation so that her mention of anything untimely or evil like "death" would always be made in a positive context. And~ my equally wise Scottish husband reminds everyone as we start down the path of gossip~ "Say nothing~ we all understand and the world needs no more unkindness."
  • Negative words are damaging! In parenting~ living~ and professional circles~ speak no evil! The unique power of words should bring us together in humanity not separate us in barbarity!
