Students complete a chart showing what they know about the Holocaust, what they want to know, how they're going to find it, and what they learned.
Objectives
Students will:
- research print and/or online resources.
- organize information.
- integrate and use information.
- learn about the Holocaust.
Keywords
Holocaust, K-W-H-L, chart, Jews, Nazi, Auschwitz, vote
Materials Needed

K-W-H-L Chart Print the chart and provide each student with a copy.
Lesson Plan
- Read aloud the following quote by Ian Kershaw: "The road to Auschwitz was built by hate, but paved with indifference." (See Holocaust/Shoah.) Discuss what the quote means.
- Ask students to vote on whether the quote is true. Create a chart showing the results of the vote.
- Provide students with copies of a K-W-H-L Chart. Have each student complete a chart, using information that proves or disproves the accuracy of the quote.
- Ask each student to use the information in the chart to write a short argument justifying his or her point of view.
- Have each student present his or her argument to the class.
- When students finish their presentations, repeat the vote on whether the quote is true and compare the results of the two votes.
Assessment
Students are evaluated on the reasoning behind their arguments.
