On the heels of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), which govern math and language arts, a new set of standards aimed at science is being released.
Next Generation Science Standards, developed by CCSS architect Achieve, are the third set of voluntary, uniform standards that states may choose to implement. The structure of the standards identifies and targets the following four disciplines of physical sciences:
The standards also address the applications of these sciences.
The Next Generation Science Standards are organized by grade level for grades K–5 and by grade-banded expectations for grades 6–12.
The 26 lead states that collaborated on the development of the science standards have promised to seriously consider their adoption. The timing of adoption will be tricky, given the current state of pushback on the Common Core and the political hot buttons of climate change and evolution that are addressed in the sciences.
