Baseball Fact or Fiction

Subject: Literature, Ed. Technology
Grade: K-2, 3-5, 6-8

Brief Description

Students learn about the history of baseball while incorporating computer skills, reading skills, and writing abilities.

Objectives

Students compare prior knowledge about baseball before the lesson to learned knowledge after researching information about baseball. Students improve research skills and knowledge of baseball history.

Keywords

baseball, fact, fiction, correct, incorrect

Materials Needed

computer(s) with Internet access, pencils or pens, Baseball worksheet.

Lesson Plan

  • Distribute the baseball worksheet. Have students read the statements about baseball numbered 1 to 15.
  • Above the statements is a T chart with the word Fact on one side of the T and the word Fiction on the other side. Tell students to write the statements they think are Fact under that word on the worksheet and the statements they think are Fiction under that word on the worksheet.
  • Once students have mapped all 15 statements onto the T chart to show prior knowledge about baseball, tell students to turn the page over and research the statements from the web site Exploratorium Science of Baseball.

Assessment

Success will be based on how many statements students answer correctly on the worksheet.
