Brief Description
Students create mnemonics that help them remember the correct spellings of words.
Objectives
Students practice spelling words and understand how memory devices can aid learning.
Keywords
spelling, mnemonics
Materials Needed

- Musical Spelling Rules
- other print or online resources about mnemonics
- a list of spelling words
- pencils and paper
Lesson Plan
- Explain to students that a mnemonic is a device, such as a formula or rhyme, that people use as an aid to remember something (from Dictionary.com).
- Ask students to review Musical Spelling Rules or other print or online resources containing mnemonics for spelling.
For example, here is a mnemonic to help students learn or remember how to spell the word mnemonic:
Monkeys
Never
Eat
Mayonnaisse
On
Noodles
In
Canada
- Provide each student with a word from the class spelling list. Have each student write and illustrate a mnemonic that will help him or her remember how to spell the assigned word.
- Display the mnemonics on a classroom bulletin board.
Perhaps you would like to challenge students to present their mnemonics in video or PowerPoint format. If students create videos, they might submit them for addition to the Spelling Mnemonics videos on Teacher Tube.
Assessment
Evaluate students on the accuracy and creativity of their mnemonics.
