Ocean Mysteries, Legends, and Customs

Brief Description
Students use the Internet to research mysteries, legends, and customs related to the ocean. Students choose one topic and create a short story about it.

Objectives

Students demonstrate abilities to use the Internet to research information. Students demonstrate creative thinking, creative writing, and organization skills to create a short story about a topic.

Materials Needed

computers with Internet access and printer, writing paper, pens/pencils, student-chosen materials to illustrate their short stories

Lesson Plan

 

  • Ask students to define the words mystery, legend, and custom. Explain to students that numerous mysteries, legends, and customs are related to the ocean.
  • Have students explore the sites Ocean Mysteries and "Ocean Planet" Legends and Customs of the Sea. Ask each student to choose one of the mysteries, legends, or customs listed, then write and illustrate a short story about the topic. Variation: Have students explore the sites and write an original mystery, legend, or custom about the ocean.

Assessment

Evaluates students' stories.
