Included: Curriculum resources for teachers, useful facts and articles for parents, games and activities for students. The Eyes Have It! In honor of Children's Eye and Health Safety Month, Education World searched the Web for information and activities that will help your students learn about, and learn to appreciate the value of, their eyes. "Children Act Fast...So Do Poisons!" According to the American Association of Poison Control Centers, more than one million children in this country were involved in accidental poisonings in 1996 -- and more than 90 percent of those poisonings occurred in the home. Serve Up Classroom Nutrition Activities! Serve up a well-balanced nutrition unit! A "bunch" of activities to pick from! Teach Your Students to Be "Sun Savvy"! The summer sun offers teachers an important opportunity to talk about sun safety. Many Internet sites carry strong sun safety messages or offer teachers valuable lesson plans for teaching about the science of the sun. Snapshots of Medicine and Health Part of the National Institutes of Health Web site, this section focuses on research, discoveries, and developments in biomedicine. Nutrition Benny Goodsport The central character is Benny the fitness clown. The site uses him and several other cartoon characters to teach children about physical fitness and nutrition. Kids Food Cyber Club The Kids Food Cyber Club was designed to teach third-grade to fifth-grade children about food, nutrition and health. The site has sections for parents, teachers and students. Kid's Sites Kid's Health Although the site is divided into three sections, all three are concerned with children's health issues. Health educators could probably use all three sections when creating or supplementing lesson plans. Brain Pop! Brain Pop is a fun interactive site that teaches about health and science through on-line movies, quizzes, and other activities. Teenage Health Interactive Network The Teenage Health Interactive Network (THINK) is a site designed to give teenagers a place to explore health issues and discuss what they think about a variety of health-related topics. Personal Care Yo, It's Time for Braces Here's a site that can teach young people everything they need to know about braces, presented in a fun optimistic format. No Cavities Club The No Cavities Club is a site dedicated to healthy teeth. Dr. Bunny teaches children about oral hygiene with interactive games, stories, and art projects. Substance Abuse Driving Under the Influence Driving Under the Influence is the place to find all sorts of important information about the dangers of driving while under the influence of alcohol and other drugs. Just Say No! The site offers a set of projects that students can work on to prevent substance abuse both in the classroom and within the community. National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug Information For Kids Only The site teaches about the effects of drugs and alcohol, gives tips for kids about how to say no, and offers advice for children of alcoholics.
