As technology gets cheaper and smaller, schools continue to reap the benefits of greater numbers of students having access to it. Case in point: the Velocity Micro Shine digital projector, which is the smallest HD digital projector in the world.
The Velocity Micro Shine raises the bar in the world of pico projectors with a 1280 x 768 HD (WXGA) resolution that comes 3D-ready out of the box. While not exactly 1080p, the resolution is pretty impressive when you consider the entire device fits in the palm of your hand. The Shine’s longest dimension is a mere four inches, and it weighs in at a paltry nine ounces.
One of the projector’s criticisms is actually a benefit to teachers. Unlike most pico projectors, the Shine does not have a built-in rechargeable battery. Mobile enthusiasts have panned this omission, although in most educational situations, the projector is kept in a single room, making plugging into the wall outlet no big deal. The outlet-based power source also means a significantly brighter display.
The Shine comes with HDMI, USB and stereo audio-out inputs. It also contains an on-board media player and WiFi connectivity. All of this clearly lends itself to Android and Windows-based computers and devices. Apple users, however, can also take advantage of the Shine’s size and specs with an HDMI converter cable.
All of the specs and images have tech enthusiasts very excited for the release of the Shine, but the projected cost is the real hook. Early reports have the price point coming in under $400. Admittedly, the Shine doesn’t have many of the interactive features of educational smartboards like the ones produces by Prometheus. But for the cost of one mid-range smartboard, a school could purchase about nine Shines. That means more students having access to the technology.
