Content: In partnership with the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, NBCLearn’s Finishing the Dream: Learning from the Civil Rights Era brings this historical period to life with over one hundred archival clips and original town hall conversations from around the country.
Design: This is an offshoot of the main NBCLearn Web site and as such, it is clean-looking with minimal branding. This is a boon to educators who dislike the “in-your-face” approach of some educational content providers.
Review: NBC News boasts a sterling reputation in the news industry, so it’s no surprise that the content here is equally good. Students can watch actual broadcasts from seminal events in the fight for civil rights. Additionally, produced segments and retrospectives provide commentary and add depth to the news pieces. While it is advantageous to see the broadcast of the Little Rock Nine integrating Central High School, it’s even better for students to hear firsthand accounts from those who experienced the event.
Along with a plethora of video content, special tools embedded in the NBCLearn media player serve to enhance the footage. For example, an expandable transcript feature allows teachers to pull up a written transcript of the video they are watching.
Bottom Line: Many sites offer Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech. Finishing the Dream provides that and so much more.
