Keywords

Materials Needed

  • list of spelling words
  • three spinners (or dice)
  • chalkboard and chalk (for scorekeeping)

Lesson Plan

Divide students into three teams and have them sit in rows at desks. Give the first member of each team a spinner (needle on a card) that will be used to determine the number of points each spelling word will be worth. Use number amounts that are appropriate for your students, like 1-6 points.

Dice can be used in place of spinners if spinners are not available.

Now select a team to go first and ask the first player to spin the spinner. Announce the number of points as determined by the spin, and read a spelling word. (For example, "For three points, spell anonymous.") Have the student attempt to spell the word. If she is correct, she receives the number of points determined. If not, the first student on the next team has the opportunity to earn the points by spelling the word correctly. Play continues in that manner.

You might ask the first student on each team who earns a point for his group to be the group's scorekeeper at the board or on paper. The game is over when time runs out or all spelling words have been covered.

This game can also be used in foreign language classes.

Assessment

The team with the most points at the end of the exercise is the winner.
