Sarah Childress was born near murfreesboro, Tenessee, on September 4 1803 She was born at a time when few girl's went to school, but Sarah was given the rare gift of an education. That gift would pay off after she marryd James K Polk. Sarah and James had no children, so Sarah worked behind the scenes to help his husband acheve success. In 1845, James became the 11th president of the United States and Sarah become America's first lady.
