Materials Needed

  • copy of the Signs of Spring work sheet for each student
  • scissors
  • crayons, markers, colored pencils, or other art media
  • laminating machine (optional)

Lesson Plan

Welcome spring with cheery door decorations! These delightful decorations will make great springtime additions to students' homes. The make great Mother's Day gifts or excellent donations to retirement homes!

To get students thinking, brainstorm some signs of spring and list them on the chalkboard or on chart paper.

Then provide a copy of the Signs of Spring work sheet for each student. Instruct students to cut out the door hanger. Next, have them cut along the dotted line from the side to the center circle and then cut out the center circle.

Now the real creativity begins! You may allow students to add color with crayons or other art media. Have the students decorate both sides of the hanger and mark them with their names or initials. For longer use, laminate the door hangers.

Additional Ideas

  • Instead of coloring the hanger, have the students use the work sheet as a pattern. Trace the hanger on to construction paper, then cut it out. Glue on shapes also made of construction paper. These may also be laminated.
  • Purchase craft foam and use it as the base for the hanger and glue on cutouts in spring shapes for a durable, 3-D presentation.
  • This project makes an excellent donation to retirement homes!

Assessment

Satisfactory submissions will reflect the theme of spring and show evidence of following directions as detailed by the teacher.
