Brief Description

Students match each vocabulary word to the appropriate sport and create a class glossary that will add to their understanding and enjoyment of the Winter Olympic Games.

• match each new word to the sport with which it is associated.
• create a glossary that includes the activity's words and other winter sports words students encounter.

Lesson Plan

In this activity students learn vocabulary associated with the sports represented at the Winter Olympic Games. The activity can be completed in several ways. Students can use the activity

• as a starting point for creating a class glossary of Winter Olympics terms, adding new words to the glossary as they come across them while watching Olympic coverage on TV or tracking it in the newspaper.
• as a scavenger hunt, completed in small groups in the library.
• as a learning center activity in a one-computer classroom.
• as an whole class activity in the computer lab.
• in any other way you might adapt it!

Students match each vocabulary word in the right column (see activity below) to the sport the word is associated with.

• Students can use a dictionary or other library resources to complete the activity.

Click a Winter Olympic Games sport to go to a page that explains the sport and includes a link to a glossary of terms related to that sport.

Another variation: In addition to completing the matching activity, older students might write a definition for each word.

Assessment

Students should correctly match at least six of the eight vocabulary terms.
