A Gallery of Mexican Art

Brief Description

Students tour a virtual gallery of Mexican Art and create a glossary of art terms.

Objectives

Students learn about the history and culture of Mexico through studying Mexican art.

  • 14-inch balloon, inflated
  • 10-inch bowl
  • papier-mache paste
  • newspaper
  • 32-oz. plastic yogurt container, cut in half horizontally
  • string
  • hole punch
  • glue stick
  • tissue paper
  • individually wrapped candies

  • How to Make Star Pinatas
  • newspaper
  • scissors
  • stapler
  • aluminum foil
  • rubber cement
  • balloon
  • wheat paste or liquid starch
  • wire
  • tape
  • tissue paper
  • ribbon
  • individually wrapped candies.

Lesson Plan

  • Discuss with students the different cultures that are part of Mexico's history. Point out that those cultures heavily influenced Mexican art.
  • Invite students to tour Mexico: Splendors of Thirty Centuries. When students complete their individual tours, brainstorm with all students comparisons of art from the pre-Hispanic period and art created after the Spanish conquest.
  • Provide students with instructions for completing the glossary activity People, Nationalities, Customs.
  • Instead of asking students to prepare oral reports on three of the terms used, ask students to choose five terms, find the definition of each, and then use each term in a sentence that describes a piece of art in the exhibit.
Extension:
Invite students to learn How to Make a Pinata or How to Make Star Pinatas.

Assessment

Evaluate students on the accuracy of their use of the terms in describing Mexican art.
