arts teacher, Saunders Middle School, Manassas, Virginia Why does Laura Dowling maintain her Web site, Mrs. Dowling's Virtual Classroom? "Parents love it," she told Education World. "They feel more a part of their child's education. Kids love it too. They enjoy the online community it creates." Dowling created her Web site in an attempt to establish a seamless environment from school to home. She wants her students to realize that learning doesn't take place just in school; it's a never-ending activity. Dowling believes that her site adds another dimension to her classroom. Dowling's classroom Web site serves many purposes. It provides
"The site gives the students access to classroom information and assignments all the time," Dowling explained. "It's a great way for all stakeholders in the students' education to stay connected and informed." And because she loves to write HTML, the site is Dowling's ideal hobby! Dowling stores many class documents on her Web site and invites other educators to use them. For example, in the General Class Information section, Dowling provides helpful tips on classroom management, the ABCs of Success, classroom work, behavior, and grading policies, and sample welcome letters to parents and students. She plans to add even more material as she "works out the kinks." "Many teachers have asked to use my site as a model for their own sites," reported Dowling. "I find that very rewarding."
