Book Review:
Title: Becoming Scientists: Inquiry-Based Teaching in Diverse Classrooms, Grades 3-5, By Rusty Bresser and Sharon Fargason. Stenhouse Publishers, 2013.
Description: This book encourages the teaching of science through inquiry-based techniques that involve grade 3-5 students exploring the “why” and “how” of scientific phenomena, and then conducting guided experiments around these questions.
“An abundance of research tells us that children construct their own knowledge by testing ideas and approaches based on their prior knowledge and experience, applying these to new situations, and integrating the new knowledge with precasting intellectual constructs,” the book notes.
Becoming Scientists discusses how children learn science, distinguishing between inquiry and hands-on science. Key chapters include Managing the Classroom, Supporting English Language Learners in the Diverse Classroom, and Navigating the Challenges of Inquiry Science: Responding to Teachers’ Questions, all of which provide a strong foundation for implementing inquiry-based science instruction.
“Thus, the role of the teacher becomes very different from the way it looks in a typical hands-on curriculum. The teacher inspires inquiry by posting provocative questions, facilitates conversations, makes experimenting possible, and encourages in-depth thinking,” the authors suggest.
Bresser and Fargason outline a clear approach, while allowing room for adjustments based on student learning styles.
Bottom Line: Becoming Scientists offers ideas flexible enough for a broad range of classrooms, including those with students of lower socioeconomic status. Aiming to narrow the achievement gap, this book is great for any elementary-level science educator.
About the Author: Rusty Bresser is a supervisor of teacher education at University of California - San Diego’s Education Studies Department. Sharon Fargason teaches at Fay Elementary School in San Diego, and teaches courses on literacy and math methods to Brandman University graduate students.
How to Purchase: This title is available for $20 on the Stenhouse site.
