Technology: Teachable Moments

  1. I am a teaching head of a high school. As such~ I seek opportunities to use the lessons I experience in class to serve as life lessons to the faculty. The hardest lessons these days are those resulting from social media. Students are indeed young~ make the foolish choices of youth~ and must again and again pay the price of public humiliation. Unfortunately~ the situation is exacerbated when parents attempt to rationalize bad behavior and poor choices by saying~ "But my child isn't alone~ look at what so-and-so did." Where were these parents when we asked for help supervising their children's media accounts? Where were they when we asked them as adults to help us help children to learn right from wrong? We need solidarity as adults~ and we need consequences that are in line with the visions of the schools we lead.
  2. As adults we owe children our best in role modeling~ language choices~ and social media posting. We must remain strong as adults and keep children safe from inappropriate and self-destructive uses of social media. Consider this poster regularly seen on Twitter accounts:
  3. Teach parents and teach students to think; and~ remain strong as we keep our high school students from posting stupid pictures that are embarrassing~ forever!
