Nikolai's Web Site
http://nikolai.com/default.htm
GRADE LEVEL: 3-8+

CONTENT:
This is a site similar to a clubhouse for children. Users will find games, activities, newsletters, and recipes for students.

AESTHETICS:
The site's visual image is geared toward children. The site uses cartoon characters from the creator's CD-ROM game, along with other colorful backgrounds and colored lettering.

ORGANIZATION:
The site map is a great place to navigate the site. It is set up like a pirate's treasure map with links to each part of the site. Every page has navigation links at the bottom to the site map or the home page.

REVIEW:
The developers of the Nikolai's Adventure CD-ROM series have created a children's Web site. Users can play games online, read recipes, or print out craft and other activities that children can color, cut, and paste together. The site follows the guidelines of the Children's Advertising Review Unit (CARU) for online kid safety. The site does not rent or sell any information collected from children, and the site provides "Reminder" icons at key points of the site where children are required to enter information. The icon notifies children that adult permission is suggested. Before becoming members, children must have their parents sign and mail a permission form. The site provides its material for free but does have advertising on the site. The site has "Ad icons" next to each ad and when clicked a message appears advising users they are leaving the site. This is a well-supervised, kid-safe site and students and parents should definitely look it over. Educators may also wish to view the site with their students and create lessons around some of the subject lessons at the site.
