REVIEW:
What are MOOs and why do Internet users need to know about them? At some point in surfing the Internet the term MOO or MUD is sure to come up. This site provides some answers as to what they are and what people do with them. As the site states "MUDs started as interactive adventure games similar to Dungeons and Dragons for the computer -- but a version that participants could play over the Internet." The use of MUDs has changed to include other sorts of games and educational and social uses. MOOs (Object Oriented MUDs) put more of the focus on the "objects" and become text-based virtual realities that allow players to move between rooms and interact with objects in the rooms. MOOs come in many forms and can be purely social such as games. Professional versions of MOOs allow users in similar professional fields to "meet" online to discuss issues. MOOs can also be used for educational purposes. The site warns, however, that MOOs are not for everyone nor for every lesson plan and teachers should research the concept of MOOs before using them in class. This site provides the research as well as some sample sites and links to other pages with sample MOOs. It is worth checking out if you're curious about MOOs and their uses.
