Teaching With Windows

Short on money? Windows comes with a number of classroom-friendly features that you can use instead of purchasing other programs. Read on for a few of those hidden gems.

Adapt Technology To Students' Needs

Whether a student needs a larger font size, a slower mouse, audio prompts, or another modification, Windows XP can meet most of the assistive technology needs found in a regular classroom. Check out Windows XP Step-by-Step Tutorials in Accessibility to learn more.

Technology for Everyone
Windows provides free accessibility tools.

If you have a student with visual or physical disabilities, check out the Windows' Accessibility Wizard for ideas on modifying a computer to fit his or her needs. To find the wizard, click Start > All Programs > Accessories > Accessibility.

Technology for Free
Use the Windows calculator for Math practice and more.

Many fun and engaging computer lessons don't require fancy or expensive software. The calculator that comes free in Windows (and in Mac OS) provides practice that engages students and reinforces skills.

Technology to Motivate
Save money making your own posters.

Make your own motivational posters in Microsoft Paint. Go to File > Open in Paint, and your My Pictures folder (usually!) will open with sample pictures of lilies, mountains, and a sunset. Open one of those pictures in Paint, use the text button to write a motivational phrase for your classroom walls, andviola!an instant motivational poster.
