Tech in the Classroom:

Screencast-O-Matic

What is itThis is a presentation recording tool for Mac or PC.

How does it work? SOM allows users to record all of the actions on their computer as well as audio commentary and save the recording for sharing or future playback.

How hard is it to use? It is incredibly simple. Once the software is installed and running, the user can adjust SOMthe size of the capture area. Users can include the entire screen, or only a portion of it. Once the capture space is set, all users have to do is click the record button. From that point, anything done on the computer or spoken into the mic is recorded. The recording can be stopped at any point and then resumed; however, there is a 15-minute limit to the length of the recording. There are two plans available.  The Deluxe plan is $20/year.  The Premiere plan is $36/year and users experience no limitations to the length of their recordings as well as a handful of other premium Deluxe custom features.

Once the recording is complete, users can save it to their desktop in one of several popular file formats, the easiest of which to work with is mp4.

How well does it work? Like a charm. The audio is clear, and there is no lag between actions and commentary. Watching a video is like watching someone in-house conduct a tutorial.

How do I use it in the classroom? SOM’s classroom uses are limited only by teacher imagination. Enhancing lessons, providing instruction for absent students and making a class video are only a few of things Screencast-O-Matic can accomplish.
