Tech in the Classroom: KidRex

What is it?  KidRex is a search engine, powered by Google Custom Search, for children's use. The site uses Google Custom Search to screen out offensive and inappropriate information.

How does it work?  The site operates a lot like Google, where users can type whatever they would like to search into the search box. There is an option for kids and for parents to use KidRex for research and other needs.

How hard is it to use?  KidRex is very simple to use. Once the user initiates a search, it's straightforward to navigate. By scrolling through search results, users can access various Web pages.

How well does it work?  A confusing aspect of the site is that it offers no options for viewing images, news, videos, or other alternate categories of resources. This gives the user no choice but to turn to Google or other sites, such as YouTube, to access these resources.

How do I use it in a classroom?  KidRex can be used in early-elementary classrooms as a research tool. For class projects, book reports or other assignments that require looking up information, KidRex is a great, safe search engine for students.
