Web Site Review: PBS Kids Play - Classroom Edition

Site URL:  Classroom.PBSKidsPlay.org

Content:  PBS Kids Play - Classroom Edition is an award-winning, computer-based program that uses interactive content to engage students in cross-curricular learning. The program adapts the level of challenge to each student based on learning progress and aligns to Common Core and McREL standards.

Design:  The site is meant for younger students, and the design reflects that. Characters from shows like "Dinosaur Train," "Thomas and Friends" and "Curious George" feature prominently. PBS does a good job of keeping the controls and navigation simple so that students can easily use the site.

Review:  Game-based learning and popular children’s characters create an engaging learning environment. The program goes beyond math and language arts to address creativity, science and developmental themes.

Because the site incorporates elements from PBS’ popular stable of characters, students are immediately drawn in. This, coupled with the game-like interface, creates a learning product that younger children will enjoy.

From a technical standpoint, PBS Kids Play is incredibly versatile. It can be used in single-computer classrooms, or in multi-unit computer labs. For those with interactive white boards, the site is certified SMART™ Board-compatible.

Users should know that the site is not free, but the starting price tag of $199 per year is very reasonable.

Bottom Line:  For early elementary classes looking for a comprehensive learning tool, PBS Kids Play is an excellent choice.
