Education World® Celebrates Math Awareness Week: April 26 - May 2

The whole language vs. phonic debate may be cooling -- just as the "Math Wars" debate heats up!

This week, Math Awareness Week, Education World turns the spotlight on mathematics education. Not that we had to turn the spotlight on it The news of the dismal showing by U.S. students on the TIMSS study and the current "Math Wars" debate is drawing plenty of attention to math education without our help, thank you!

Among the stories you'll find on Education World's pages this week:

  • Math Wars! The TIMSS studies have incited a hot debate centered on the way in which mathematics is being taught in many classrooms in this country. Is a traditional approach better than a "whole math" approach? Which side will win out in America's "Math Wars"?
  • Math Sites to Count On! Dozens of math-related Internet sites that will add to your lessons and multiply your effectiveness! Included: Recommended sites for teachers of K-3, 4-6, and 7-12. Also Games for Math Whizzes and More Math Resources for Teachers!
  • New Books Add Up to Math Fun! Stories + math skills = winning children's books! Check out a handful of new titles that embed essential math skills within fabulous children's stories!
  • Clinton Challenges Nation to Improve Math and Science Education On March 16, President Clinton President challenged public officials, business leaders, universities, schools, teachers, parents, and students to take the steps necessary to boost student achievement in math and science. Included: The text of his speech.

NEXT WEEK: The debate continues with the great calculator debate!

ALSO THIS WEEK:

  • The Internet Safety Debate Yes, it's OK to filter Internet content in schools. No, students should learn how to handle the Internet as it is. The debate continues... no solution in sight.
  • Familiar Ground: Traditions That Build School Community An inspiring new book from the Northeast Foundation for Children describes how a school staff uses traditions to weave a school of individual students, staff, and families into one community.
